Story of the Month: A look inside our Denney Juvenile Justice Program
Written by Emmy Fansler, Program Director, Arts with a Purpose
Terrence is a kind, goofy, and talented kid. He’s super playful, and he knows that he’s charming, so he pushes boundaries a lot, but he’s very easy to like. We’ve danced together the last two showcases, and it’s been a blast! He’s a gifted freestyler and he is super body aware, plus he knows that he’s good so he is more willing to try new things. Anyway, we’ve had a good relationship since he came to Denney Juvenile Justice Center, but yesterday felt specifically sweet. He came into class beaming and wanted to talk about his future. He asked me if I was serious about letting him teach with me when he gets out, because he really wants that to happen. I am still super energized by how hopeful he sounded. I told him he would absolutely be good at it, of course I would love for him to teach with me, and how much fun it always is to choreograph with him. He asked a lot of questions about what it’s like to be a dance teacher and if I really thought he’d be good at it, what other styles I could teach him, etc... it was SO AMAZING to hear this kid talk about his future with HOPE.

Let's hear about the experience from Emmy's point of view. "Jess, a young person in our program, asked me to sing with her because she was so nervous. She sang into the mic and I sang to her. She started by facing away from the audience, then gradually got more confident and turned to face them. By the end of the song, she was using her whole body and belting. I am maybe 3 feet away from her in this photo, and it’s clear just how proud I am of her."
We love stories like this and we are so happy we can share them with an audience!
Happy belated birthday to Emmy, our program director! All of us here at Arts with a Purpose want to thank you for everything you do to support our mission and our youth! You are the reason for our impact and we are so thankful to have you!

Get to know the AWP Board!
First up we have our Board President, Marissa Lautenslager!
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself!
I work at Seattle Children's hospital and my husband and I have two children- my daughter is 9 & my son is 4. We also just recently added a puppy, Sadie, to our family so home life is busy. In my work life, I have experience with fundraising, grant-writing, project management and more. Between my kids, my work and AWP, I stay busy, which is just how I like it.
2. When you're not working, how do you like to spend your time?
When I'm not working, I love going on little adventures-- whether that is a day-trip somewhere, finding a newly discovered trail or park, taking a ferry across the water or going away for a weekend. These are definitely all favorites when time allows.
3. Describe Arts with a Purpose in 3 words!
AWP in 3 works is Connection, Creativity and Hope!
4. What brought you to AWP?
Emmy brought me to AWP. Emmy's heart and determination for change is inspiring. She makes a difference every single day. Initially, Emmy and my daughter connected and conversations began about her work, the kids, and the importance of it all and my daughter became her biggest advocate. She has even done her own fundraising for AWP. Emmy and I continued to connect about AWP and how I could help and over time that turned into me being a member of the Board. It has been a great experience and I look forward to the continued growth and success of AWP.
Stay tuned for our next showcase!
